Interesting read, Mark.

I still have trouble saying no, even when I sometimes know I should!

Nice to see you the other day, hope you're busy :)

I know exactly what you mean about people in the kind of professions that require the basics of the English language. One particular event stands out in my mind:

When I was at school, I think I was 15, and we had just returned from the summer holidays. We had a new geography teacher who, in his first lesson with us, made 5 spelling mistakes on the board, to which I corrected every one. I was then sent to our head of year for being disruptive. I explained the reason to the head and was told it wasn't my place to correct teachers and spelling doesn't matter considering it was a geography lesson and not English.

What does this say to a parent who is sending their child to school to learn? If I was sending my son to a school where the teachers cannot even spell, and the students get penalised for spelling correctly, I think I would seriously consider sending him to another school.

There is someone I know who works with children at a primary school. She is very intelligent yet continues to abuse the English language via Facebook on a daily basis. Here are a few examples:

"Even betta cause am not workin al wkend"
"Cen my lil niece this aft, guna b a lil beauty"
"lukin at tattoos, dare i av 1 dun?" (this is doubly stupid considering she is pregnant, but that's a rant for another day)

I have never understood why people continue to write like this, I personally have to really think of how I would shorten certain words, so I find it much quicker to type the real thing.

I'll leave it at this anyway as my response will end up as long as the article.

I couldn't agree with you more! I have recently set up my own law practice and I desperately want to shed the corporate image that solicitors have. I've thrown out my suits (except 1 for tribunal hearings!), but I confess that I do struggle with what to wear to ensure clients and contacts still take me seriously. I've even gone to the expense of having a Wardrobe Consultation with Cleo Lacey.
I've also heard of a story recently whereby attendees at a networking group dismissed this guy because he was wearing jeans. What they didn't know was that he could have introduced them to some key people within their target industry. Lesson there is not to make assumptions about anyone and certainly not as a result of their outfit!
