I’ve been working on a few bigger blog posts which I’ll be getting around to publishing over the next few months and something has occurred to me; as I write these posts I keep dipping in and out of WordPress on my iPhone to add and edit things within them, as the ideas enter my head.

This is something I couldn’t have done a few years ago and it got me thinking: how has having the trusty iPhone (or smart phone of your choice) affects the way I work.

Aside from the usual gaming / time killing that I do on my iPhone whilst out and about, I actually rely on the thing for so much more:

  • Quick access to this here blog
  • Quick notes that I can sync up to my Mac
  • I practically live off my calendar
  • Instant access to my emails
  • I get to meetings quicker, especially in crazy city centres, thanks to Google Maps
  • Access to quick (Ego) or deep (Analytics Pro) Google Analytics data
  • Keep up to date with industry news via some top quality RSS readers

OK that all sounds pretty obvious but realistically, it has a big impact on my interaction with clients:

  • I can instantly answer any urgent queries via email, and diarise a follow up or courtesy call without fear of forgetting to check my phone to remind me. This is thanks to the sync capabilities of course.
  • I  can take calls and schedule meetings without having to call clients back to arrange
  • I’m no longer stuck 10 minutes late for a meeting because I parked up 100 yards from a client’s office in Sheffield only to be baffled by the streets (that has happened…)
  • I can check client’s Analytics information on the fly to respond on any queries a client may have. This is especially useful when dealing with some of our PPC management clients
  • I can be productive in the most unproductive of circumstances (like sat on the sofa in River Island waiting for my better half to try on some jeans – yawn) by posting and scheduling Tweets and blog posts

All in all, nothing major I’m sure you’ll agree. But when you think about it, it makes for a much more fluid client interaction process and gives you some time that you wouldn’t normally have to get some of those little tasks out of the way.

How has your smartphone improved your productivity?
