There’s an interesting story over on the BBC Technology site which looks at how Yahoo! is not abandoning it’s search business despite losing out more and more to Google and Bing.

It’s a good read as a SEM and provides a bit of an insight into the company’s plans for it’s search product going forward; Yahoo! of course did pioneer this a decade ago…

The thing that really got me wondering is this quote from Greg Sterling of SearchEngineLand:

“I think the market wants a competitive Yahoo, it doesn’t want to see just two players dominate this space. It wants more diversity and innovation and that comes from competition. I give them a fighting chance.”

As a search marketer, of course we want to see Yahoo! bounce back and drive innovation in search the way that Google is constantly doing. But, my question is this:

As standard web users – do people really care whether or not they have a pick list of search providers, as long as they get relevant results from their queries?
