Just before Christmas we posted a blog called Migrating from BlogEngine.net to WordPress – first thoughts and why we did it; now it’s time for the how..

We couldn’t find too much on the subject and if you do a Google search for “Migrating from BlogEngine to WordPress” there isn’t too much information, with a few exceptions:

The reason I think the Merill post is great is that it addresses alot of issues you will come across in your migration, without a doubt.

The biggest issue that we had was the category GUID problem that Merill talks about; you are going to need to find a way around this. The easiest and safest way is to rename the categories within WordPress following installation. It is a bit of a pain in the rear if you have many categories, but it is worth it.

The rest is kind of easy – just install WordPress as normal and be sure to take a back up of your BlogEngine.net install just in case. This is straightforward enough given the fact that BlogEngine uses XML as standard to store information. Drag and drop your blog to a local drive and keep it safe.

You’re going to need a few things:

To summarise, check out the blog posts above (especially the Merill one) and it’ll all flow nice and easily. And remember, if it all goes pear shaped just remove WordPress and start the install again.

Good luck with migrating from BlogEngine.net to WordPress; I hope it goes well and feel free to fire any questions across if you need any help!

  1. blogengine improves its usability after upgrading to 1.5

  2. Hi,

I have troubles in completing the migration so the question is: will the import plugin work only for the word-press versions up to 2.6?

  3. Hi Alex

I installed on 2.9 and it worked fine.

I just had to tweak my Categories from the GUIDs to actual names.

    Hope that helps.

  4. The most important part is your blog become search engine friendly so that visitors can find your site and you can gain the target traffic from search engines. SEO is better on blogengine.net software.

  5. How so?

  6. Hi,

My issue with the import is related to the actual import operation.
So after I set up word-press, created the database and a user with permissions, gave write permissions on the folder and added the plugin so the import section of word-press recognizes the BlogML import format. I have the export file from the BlogEngine.NET blog (an XML file) and I have also changed the categories names from the GUID to the corresponding names.
After hitting Upload file and Import, after waiting a while, the page only displays this text: Import BlogML, no links, no results and in the wp-content/uploads/2010/02 folder there is a single txt file with the same name as my backup file from BlogEngine just with an underscore at the end.
Is this something any of you experienced? I need some help please.
    Thank you.

  7. Hi Alex

I’ve not come across this before I’m afraid. I recall when I imported it took a while, are you letting the plugin finish its import cycle?

The text file sounds like a temp file?

I’ll post this to Twitter and see if we can get any answers…

  8. Hey Mark,

Yes, the import seems done and after reload the page, as I was writing in the other post, just displays the title: Import BlogML.
I guess this is a tweaking issue after all, but haven’t found so far the needed trick.
I’m still waiting for some news. Thanks for the reply.
