Popular SEO myths
A look at Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
As a set of web geeks, the one question that we get asked constantly is…. "How can I get to the top of Google?".
There is no magic wand and no straight answer to that question, but we
are here to help and we can help you rank highly and increase your
online sales.
With that in mind, take a look at some myths that we've set out to clear up…
Take 5 – fact or fiction?
- FICTION – Spending time and effort stuffing keyword into "meta" tags will gain me a high ranking
– These days only Yahoo search takes (minor) notice of your meta
keywords. Because of how easy it is to "fake" site rankings by abusing
this, the search bots take no notice of it.
- FACT – If I have high quality, industry related content on my site I will rank better -
Search engines are all about providing the most relevant content to
users that are interested in your chosen field. You will rank better if
you provide clear, concise and easy to read content to your potential
visitors.
- FICTION – Creating keyword filled doorway pages which link to my site will gain me a higher ranking
– Sadly not anymore… All the major search engines consider this
spamming and look instead for fresh and relevant content within your
main site. Only use "landing pages" for special offers etc.
- FACT – My site will rank higher if I get more links to it - This is MASSIVE. Along with optimising the site itself, your site needs quality backlinks to show the search engines that you are providing respected and reputable content.
- FICTION – As long as my site looks good, it will get ranked well - Your website needs to be built on solid and standards compliant code foundations and optimised using a strategy that suits your business. Looking good doesn't cut it alone online!
